Why do you want to risk assess a polling station?? Is there not a RA in place for the use of the school by children? Remember growns are just big children with (sometimes) a little more sense.

Hi

It would seem that the schools I have approached do not have safety officers or county safety officers have not produced risk assessments for the schools. Either way it is a breach of legislation.

Consequently I have to conduct risk assessments for the polling station building/room.

You could use a standard RA pro-forma for this type of assessment. The important part is identifying all of the hazards present, present controls and the persons that could be affected. This will include members of the public and the officials manning the polling station.

This is not an exhaustive list, but the hazards would include; access/egress, slips, trips and falls, security issues, possible violence against officials, depending upon the age of the building(s), check for the presence of asbestos containing materials, fire etc.

Hope this helps.

My big problem is putting up the booths.
Splinters; trapped fingers; manual handling.
Also remember Polling Station Officers are unfamiliar with the building so it does help if someone tells them where the loo is!

i have acted as a presiding officer on several osccasions. the polling booths that our local authority use are new aluminium ones that are very easy to erect- the officers were given full training.in my experience, there has always been a caretaker available to open and close the building and point out toilets etc. the polling station may need a risk assessment as there may be changes imposed upon the officer, such as locked access to existing exits and the necessity for using temporary ramps for disabled access.
