Posted By George Wedgwood Specifically Raj, have a read of HSE Guidance on 'Electricity at Work - Safe Working Practices' (HSG 85) and the assessment process for working live or dead. That must be followed for compliance and some expertise in managing electrical risks will be necessary beforehand. It does not really matter whether you are working with 400V or 50v, the assessment process should be the same and all servicing is best done dead. Commissioning is of course, live but the conductors should be screened or enclosed, even if this means temporary screening or enclosures whilst proving circuits. You cannot simply accept that no one will touch live conductors because they are 'clever' and aware of electrical risks! I have seen experienced electrical workers killed because they though they were clever enough to avoid the dangers and assessment will, in every case, help provide solutions to controlling against such risks, to ensure that working live is 'reasonably practicable' and working dead is unreasonable. Control measures for working live can include rubber gloves, screening of adjacent live circuits whilst commissioning a live one with insulated tools etc.

Posted By David A Cooper Commissioning of lifts is covered in PAS32-1 for traction types and PAS32-2 for hydraulic types. Modernisations, rather than new installs, fall under BS5655 part 10. Commissioning of escalators falls under EN115 or BS5656. The two important ones for you are BS7255:2001 Safe Working on Lifts and BS7801 Safe working on escalators and passenger conveyors. If you need any info get in touch as happy to help. Dave
