Posted By Crim One of my clients has tendered for a shop fit project for a well known UK high street store inside a shopping mall on the outskirts of Paris. It looks as if the tender will be successful and they have now asked me to search for health and safety/shop fit/construction regulations when operating in Paris, France. Is there a french equivalent of the CDM Regs.? as the project would meet the criteria for CDM. Any assistance will be gratefully accepted. many thanks

Posted By Merv Newman Crim, Not easy to answer that one. Yes, there are French equivalents to all the EU regulations but interpretations are sometimes quite different. You would have to know the Code du Travail and the equivalent Normes Francaises and the Code de l'environnement. And probably a few other things. I suggest that your do not worry about UK regs. Contract to a French company and get someone to help you with the risk assessments and safe systems of work. (Plan de Prévention) Then you have to monitor/audit the workplace and compliance with the SSOW. I could probably give you a few names and addresses if you want to send me an e-mail. Merv

Posted By Jim Walker Hi Merv, I do so admire the french for their, now what is it........... hypocrisy (no surely not!!). Not so long ago they were there (at the front) demanding an end to national H&S regs to allow free flow of work between EEC members. In other words a UK firm could use UK H&S when working in (say) France. I truly wish this country was more like them -less play a straight bat and more ignore the EEC unless it suits.

Posted By Crim Jim, Thanks for the response, are you really saying that if we follow the British H & S standard in France, it would not be acceptable?

Posted By Jim Walker Crim, No, but it would be interesting to see if the french authorities think so. As Merv says you are going to need a local to guide you through. By the way, congratulations to your client - winning work in France is no mean feat. Hope they factored in the max work hours.

Posted By Merv Newman I have on my desk the latest French health and Safety at Work code. It has over 2700 pages (I've just looked) and weighs in at 1.24 kg (I've just weighed it) Not following that code because you are doing things the British way will get you serious trouble. And I mean you. They go for the man as well as the company. Corporate AND personal responsibility all the way up the line. There is a very famous prison in Paris called "La Santé" Unfortunately that doesn't translate into "health farm" Blessings Merv

Posted By Crim Jim, Working hours are an issue, can you tell me more? With regard to the congratulations I feel they may dump this project when they see what is required! Merv, I just emailed you, thanks for all the info, now can you scan and email me a copy of that French health and Safety at Work code, (only joking). How are we supposed to read and remember all that I wonder?

Posted By Merv Newman Crim, you don't learn it. You live with it and hire a lawyer. I mean, who reads Croner (or is it Kroner) for fun. Except, perhaps, Mrs Croner ? Merv
