I have been working on a simple check list for workers to use prior to starting tasks throughout a large industrial engineering site. I have come up with something but it is a bit wordy and I am wondering if anyone else has anything they use which I could have a look at. The intention is to get workers to look around their workplace before they start a job and think about some basic safety issues, do I have the correct risk assessment? is it ok for this task? do I have the correct PPE? will my work impact on others? is all the equipment I will use maintained and in date etc.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

I'm not sure if it will suit your purpose but there is a document I use which is simply called a "Pre-Job Risk Assessment"

The version I use is typically aimed at the Aggregates Industry though I'm sure you would be able to adapt it to suit your particular requirements.

It's not a wordy document, but it allows the individual to assess a task/tasks and contains a list of all the typical hazards associated with work in their environment.

Basically, it allows the user to tick boxes indicating risk, state what the risk is and how it is intended to minimise or eliminate the risk. It then allows the user to state the level of remaining risk ie Low, Medium and High by simply circling the relevant option.

The site is a large multi discipline concern which does everything from logistics to ship refit and repair.
Jim if you could e-mail me your pre job assessment I would be grateful.

Probably a bit late in the day and may be a bit pointless now, but have you looked at the Irish use of Icon Related Safe System of work forms.

You know the saying "a picture paints a thousand words"

I really like the system they are using and think it is a brilliant format to be used by people whom will usually not give the time of day to wordy documents.

jason,

can you provide a link ?

We have a training programme aimed at maintenance workers which trains in static risk assement and then dynamic risk assessment : called "the butterfly moment"

Hi Merv

http://www.hsa.ie/sswp/SSWP.htm

There was a front page which shows more info.
Browse the site and you will see more.

Some may dislike these types of forms but If I were still on shop floor, I know which type, I would take more notice from.

You will notice that they seem to have a easier time in supplying safety forms in different languages this way.

I was only browsing yesterday so have not fully looked into the system and its positives v negatives. Maybe someone else has.

I am just saying, I like the idea and think they have done quite a good job at it.

They remind me of some of the COSHH forms that have been floating around from various companies in UK.

Just wish we had a UK system of pictorials as freeware or maybe even payware.

Jason
