Posted By Catman Hi All Archaeology was previously specifically not construction work according to the CDM ACOP. The new ACOP does not include that exemption, does anybody know if this has actually changed or if there is still an implied exemption? Thanks TW

Posted By RP Real time Team Question this... As it does not involve Construction or Demolition then CDM would not apply. It really only applied to Paid Employment, but, you should take into consideration other aspects of safety in general such as: 1. Avoiding the dangers from underground services 2. Trench support 3. Welfare facilities 4. Contaminated ground to name a few...

Posted By Martin C My son is currently studying archaeology and mentioned that they were being taught some specific rules concerning barriers around trenches such as height and distance from the edge. This set of rules must be available somewhere, ask a university department what they use as rules.

Posted By Dr. Andrew Rankine Hi As far as Universities are concerned Regs such as CDM and the Workplace Regs apply in exactly the same manner. The Construction Safety Adviser of this office frequently acts as a field advisor to the Archeology researchers. There tends not to be the same need to notify work as with 'normal' construction, but the same management standards should be used
