Good morning

I wonder if you could offer your opinions?

Is a risk assessment according to ACoP L8 really necessary if you are already getting the competent contractor in to clean and chlorinate all cold water storage tanks, domestic water systems and all associated outlets in accordance with the ACOP L8 and BS6700 1997?

It is just that the company will charge us £750 to do a risk assessment quoting this ACoP when we have already agreed to get the water cleaned.

I just do not see the point if we follow procedures in accordance with the HSE publication "Managing Contractors - A Guide for Employers" and we have already agreed with them to get the work done.

Am I missing something?

In a way you already have done a risk assessment as you have read the acop and have got a contractor. However assuming you have more than 4 employees then you need to put in writing.

Mind you the price they are quoting does sound a bit steep!

Surely you should do the risk assessemnt - saving £750 at the same time!

Its quite easy.

You've already identified the hazard.

Do a plan of your site identifying where all the water storage tanks are, taps, showers, potential dead legs etc.

Are the taps/showers used daily, weekly or rarly used.

If rarly used put a plan in place to either disconnect or have someone turn tap/shower on every week for a couple of minutes, also clean shower heads on a regular basis.

Your already chlorinating the water.

Many thanks Andrew, Gary and Steve for your comments and advice!

All valuable comments and good points.

Estates Manager just popped the quote in to ask my opinion, must confess to not knowing too much about legionella now, seems if I don't use it, I lose it!

Anyway, you have given me my answer so thank you very much for taking the time to respond!

Regards

Mark

You have the control measures, you know whos at risk, do the assessment yourself....alternatively charge your boss £500 and tell him you saved him money....!
