Guys

I have been asked to look at allowing the above on a secure site to service their relevant areas of our employees.

I have no issue with them coming on site, in fact I believe it is a great idea and stops employees having to "nip" to the garage etc.

My issue is over the possible fall out, if there’s an injury of the contractor on site. I do not believe it is feasible to have a method statement for every company, too much work involved on top of everything else.

Any advise welcome. More on the side of our duty to the contractor.

Many Thanks in advance

Normally you would have a contractor selection procedure and ask for standard items like Policy, RAs, Training Records, Method statements etc. However for a short notice (perhaps low risk) contractor you can by pass this. This is the approach I have used on a higher tier COMAH site in the past.

However, I would advise documenting this aspect in your procedure; also make SOMEONE responsible for ensuring that they will work safely, understand site hazards & emergency procedures etc. Document this even if it is an email to a file!

The bottom line is, should an accident occur, there is still some liability to your organisation. Better safe than sorry!

Do you have an out of the way parking space or corner of a yard that could be used in the event of this type of work being done? Designate the space, and if someone is having the RAC or similar coming in, they could swap spaces with the person already parked there. This wouldn't negate the need for the service provider to adhere to their own safe systems of work, i.e. erection of barriers and warning signs and wearing of hi-vis clothing, but it would show that you had given this type of work thought and selected a more suitable area of the site for the work to take place. Let staff know that you have a procedure in place for the RAC or similar and that employees should ensure that they use the designated area, otherwise you may ask the contractor to leave the site if the area they are working in is unsafe.
