My employer is introducing a series of changes that are to be implemented over a five year plan, the aim to reduce carbon emissions etc and they are looking for someone who will represent the workplace.

The topics that will be covered are

Climate Change,Waste, Sustainable Raw materials, Fair Partner and health.

Anyway, I have to give a 10 minute presentation and the presentation topic is

'what do I think will be the three challanges facing me as the workplace representative.

Any suggestions?

Hi Allan

We have had a throw away culture for quite a few years now, I think you will find difficulty getting people to change attitudes on these topics.

I have found it difficult to get people to take ownership of anything to do with recycling in my company. They will talk about it, but as they say actions speak louder than words. So its do it yourself here.
If you do get some support in what you are trying to achieve, the chances are you will be asked what's in it for me?

If you manage to get support how are you going to maintain the support and continue reaching set targets for improvement.

Its difficult getting people to recycle if they see no point in it. Its even harder to get them to sort scrap metal into ferrous and non ferrous
even when they have the slightest clue as to which is which. Getting there slowly very slowly.

Speak with your current waste management contractor and ask them to audit your workplace, with a view to finding out if any costs can be saved by segregating waste streams.

Hi Allan

Alan N makes some good points. I take it you have either been chosen to be the rep or want the position. Waste is always a good place to stat, every time I teach an environmental course waste is one area certain to generate lots of discussion. People often have difficulty relating there actions to a global impact such as global warming or climate change. Keep it local and relevant to them, discuss the true cost of waste, eg excess raw material bought in, cost of processing, cost of disposal etc. Try to look for some quick wins that can be fed back to the staff to show they can make a difference. Getting commitment to change and keeping commitment to change are likely to be your biggest problems.

Good luck

David
