Could anyone help me with this query a friend asked me.
He is converting a place into a shop which will have 4-5 staff on it all the time, although there will be up to 6-7 customers in the place as well.
Does there need to be a fire door? I’m presuming so. There is a door at the back that leads into a small yard so its possible to convert this into a fire door, although the yard is quite small there is a possibility for an exit door to be put in from the yard.
Obviously I think he should convert the back entrance to a fire door and put a door in the yard but he doesn’t want to for financial and security reasons unless absolulty necessary.
Anyone able to point out any advice here or a COP/BS, Legislation that could help?

As the work will require PP for change of use and building regulations approval, talk to the Building Inspector they can be very helpful.
What do the submitted plans to the Council show? You will almost certainly be expected to work with the following Building Regulations parts;
Part A - Structure
Part B - Fire safety
Part E - Resistance to the passage of sound
Part F - Ventilation
Part G - Hygiene
Part H - Drainage and waste disposal
Part M - Access to and use of buildings
Part P - Electrical safety
Part B of course will be relevant to your particular question; I assume the building is not listed?

No the building is not listed.
The shop was actually a different type of shop and its just been changed around. I wouldnt say there is anything on the council submission as its only a small enough operation and he wouldnt of asked me if it was on the plans!
I will check anyway

Do you mean a fire door or a fire exit. There is a difference. A fire door is an internal door with a fire resistance rating to reduce the spread of smoke and flames, a fire exit is a door which leads to a place of safety (i.e. to the outside of the building)

what does your fire risk assessment say?
I assume you mean fire exit doors rather than fire doors. What does the shop trade in? Is it a ground floor shop or basement or is it part of a shopping centre? What are the travel distances involved?
It sounds to me like a small shop with limited travel distances so possibly no further precautions are necessary but I would say it is a material change and so is subject to a review of your fire risk assessment.
