Posted By Jane Ling Could anyone advise of an easy, effective way of destroying and disposing of slings when they have been taken out of commission to ensure that they don't get re-used by accident or passed into other hands.
Many thanks

Posted By Alan Nicholls The easiest solution is cut them up!
Reduce them to small enough pieces to prevent joining up being an option. Then bin the bits.
Don't forget to record, (for your reference) how many you have destroyed, so you can replace like for like.

Posted By johnwaterson2773 Hi Jane,
I used to cut them up if fabric and cut them up if metal. Gives the VM's something to do when no vehicles are being repaired.

Posted By Mitch Cut 'em and bin 'em, unless of course they have been damaged during a near miss incident in which case they will have to be retained for the prescribed period.

Posted By Jane Ling Many thanks for the responses, sorry I wasn't very clear, what I wanted to know was what do you use to cut them up that isn't going to create another hazard.

Posted By William Use a sharp pair of wire cutters, that should go through them easy enough and should not create a hazard. It all depends on whether they are fabric or wire as well, but unless they are 5T or over wire slings this should not be a problem, and if this was the case you would just put them in a vice and use a hacksaw.

Posted By Bob Shillabeer I assume you are familiar with LOLER, if not read them especially Reg 9 and 10. You need to update your records and keep them safe. As regards putting them beyond use they must be rendered into a condition which will prevent them being used, cut them up melt them down burn them it all the same. It how you ensure they are taken out of used and prenented from returning to use is what counts.
