I'm looking for some help!

My company used to subscribe to the Barbour index which it has now cancelled and have asked me to find a cheaper alternative. I have looked at a few publication adverts but can't make up my mind as to which one is the best value for money.

I need something which covers UK and European health and safety legislation,(regulations, ACOP's, best practices, case law etc). It also has to provide regular updates on new legislation.

I'm sure some of you use these publications and was looking for some feedback as to which ones I should be looking at and how valuable you think they are.

Regards

Keith,

I went through a similar process last year and changed over to Croner. The service most suitable for you will depend on the amount of information you need and the business.

I find Croner to be a bit too basic and having also looked a technical indexes I will be looking to return to the Barbour service.

If you contact these providers they will all give you a free trial period to give you the opportunity to have a look.

Regards
Rachel

Hi Keith

Why not join IOSH. They send you monthly magazine full of useful information like regular updates on new legislation, there is also lots of case law, i.e. who's been fined and for what, help line for technical enquiries, a forum to discuss any issues you may have, access to legal advice, have a look at the column on the left side of this web page. All this for just over £100.

Also for legislation you can try the HSE website. They will actually sell you copies of regulations and acop's for approximately £10 depending on which regulations you want. You can also download free leaflets on most subjects. They to have a helpline which is free.

I don't know how much you pay for your subscription, but if you know where to look you can get all the information for a fraction of the cost.

And there's always good old GOOGLE.

Keith,

I cannot offer any more advice than has been given. I need information on the laws of all EU member states and not just the EU directives. Unfortunately I have not yet been able to find a source in English.

Croner-i is pretty useful but would agree it is basic in terms of some of the supporting documentation it provides. For example the forms that you can use for risk assessment, SSW, etc, etc are about as much use as a chocolate kettle and as a result do not use them. The rest of the system is ok and costs about £1600.00 for the year

Ultimately, it is dependent on your budget.

At the top level there is Barbour and Technical Indexes
There isn't much difference between Barbour and Technical Indexes-- Both provide full text "information" , depending upon the "modules" you subscribe to and can include British Standards. The other advantage is that you get publications from other professional, trade, governmental and international organisations, most of which might not be relevant unless you cover the breadth of the activities.

Then you have the likes of Croner-i and perhaps similar ones from GEE.

The cheapest full text health and safety resource is HSE Direct, but not as user friendly as the one above. Anyway, it gives excellent value for money for those on limited budgets.

Some membership subscriptions do include a variety of Health and Safety information. For example, the basic British Safety Council membership not only includes the standard magazine, guide, poster, helpline etc, but also includes, at no extra cost online access to a reasonable Health, Safety and Environmental information resource called "Safety Network"
http://www.britsafe.org/...ship/safety-network.aspx

Most offer trials, so why not try out according to your budget?

BI if affordable and IHS (formerly Technical Indexes)as a good second runner. HSE.gov will probably cover most of what you need but the afore mentioned of course include most Building reg 'parts' and BSEN's among many other beneficial contributions.

I think you'll find most if not all of what you need through the internet and this IOSH site which is full of helpful persons.

I had one of the mentioned organisations once before both in text and on a disc. I wanted to chat to someone about an issue and phoned them. The guy on the end of the phone said he had just what I was looking for and sent me by post a copy of what I already had on text copy and disc. Great help!
