Posted By Sean Fraser In conversation with one of our First Aiders who originally hails from south of the border, he tells me that it is possible to have CPR-only refreshers on an annual basis, over and above the standard 3 year refresher for FAW training. Has anyone else heard of this and is it as prevalent in England as he believes?

Posted By RoseR Hi, we run workshops for our first aiders and try to do this once a year so that they get a chance to refresh their primary skills. With the change in the Resuscitation guidelines last year, we had an update session to ensure that everyone was aware of the changes (not a legal requirement though). Some comments that we've from our first aiders is that 3 years is a very long time between training sessions, and if they don't use their skills (thankfully!) in the period between they worry that they may forget what to do. It's also a great opportunity to get them all together, discuss problems, worries etc and roll each other round the floor! The guidance hasn't changed though, it's still 3 years between refreshers.

Posted By Simon Birks CPR refresher training is available from most FA/Medical training providers as long as you are willing to pay for it! RoseR is correct in the fact that it is not currently a legal requirement for annual refresher training but this is changing with the new FAW proposals as the FAW 3 year Cert will require an annual update (otherwise the whole cert becomes invalid) as a result of skill fade highlighted in the Casella Report RR069 dated 2003. As a trainer is it fantastic people/companies/managers are considering this as it highlights the simple fact that skill fade is very prevalent in first aid and it also helps reduce the failures on FAW recertification courses which reduces a wasted cost to employers, and the very basic fact how do you expect somebody to save someone’s life on a skill they learnt the other year. CPR training can be delivered by any FA trainer, be it VAS or private training provider unless you want it to run along with the HSE standard then find an approved HSE FAW provider. Gussy
