Lighting in the workplace - Motor Vehicle Repair

Morning all
Looking for a little bit of guidance if possible, i work in motor vehicle repair and currently looking at replacing our lighting which is currently very poor.
I've been trying to find what the minimum lux level would be for a vehicle workshop - i've contacted the HSE for guidance and of course they refer me to HSG(G)38 lighting at work.
From this it seems our lux levels can be anywhere between 100 and 500 lux - i'm looking for some clear advice on this as there is a huge difference between 100 & 500 lux.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks
Dez

You need enough general lighting to enable employees to move around safely; this should be supplemented by local lighting depending on the type of work carried out. Work requiring fine perception of detail will require more light, particularly for older employees.

Believe any lighting in the service pit would need to be ATEX compliant.
We used to use a heavier duty bulb in wandering lights but I can't remember what it was called.

Hi Derek
Another thing to remember is the difference in lighting levels between working areas, not so bad now but winter hours make quite a difference while entering and exiting ,requiring a transition zone. sufficient light fittings to prevent shadows or shadowy areas.
Unless your doing very close precision work you do not require illumination to 500 lux.
200/300 lux would be more realistic, with local low voltage lighting supplied if required.
