Posted By Bob Youel anybody out there managing a dog warden service I am currently battling the service providers as they put dogs before employees and are quoting many 'procedures' etc that they think are legal requirements one aspect is that they do not use electrical devices to control dogs as they do in other countries Thoughts /opinions / guide to appropriate policies/laws appreciated

Posted By Ken Taylor Not my field, Bob but it sounds familiar from my local government days when we had a dog warden service. Personally, I always carried a dog-dazer when visiting fairgrounds, travellers' sites, etc - and even used it a few times.

Posted By Ian P WE don't eat dogs as they do in other countries either. I know the collars which give out electric shocks if a gog barks are illegal here but don't know if "dog prods" are. I suppose it could be because of public reaction if dogs were being given electric shocks to control them, the media are more likely to run a story about cruelty to animals than they are to run one on a dog warden being bitten. I personally wouldn't want to do a job where I wasn't given the appropriate PPE if it had been identified in a risk assessment but are electric prods appropriate?

Posted By J Knight Don't forget the Animal Welfare Act 2006 (or the Animal Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006 if that's where you are) which imposes a positive duty to promote the welfare of animals. I can't imagine that it would take precedence over HASAWA, but you would have to take it into account. I also find it hard to accept that people should regard being bitten as just an occupational hazard; dog bites can be very nasty even for adults, John

Posted By Bob Youel thanks for your responses the staff in this case are very nice people but do find it difficult to grasp they they are the primary concern not the dog where the dog is trying to bite etc and see bites etc as part of the job Rabies is an issue & the people concerned have good PPE however they would not wear it re their old employer because they say the dogs do not like it! And you are correct the press do not care how many people are bit as long as the dog doing the biting is OK By the way I do like animals & had dogs for years

Posted By Amanda Bob As part of the PPE for our Estates Management (they also deal with ASB) they carry 'dog dazers' as a deterrent as they often visit houses where dogs are aggressive/vicious. They have only had to deploy this a couple of times over the last few years, however they feel the need to carry it in light of the media attention of the results of dog attacks.

Posted By Ken Taylor For the uninitiated, the dog dazers simply emit a high frequency sound that is audible to dogs (and cats) but not humans. It tends to stop them in their tracks and encourages them to retreat - unless they are deaf.
