Can anybody give me the name of a good reliable health and safety consultancy to carry out work. In the past we have had bad experiences with consultancies who provided documentation which meant nothing. Any advice would be appreciated on how to choose one.

1. Be very clear in your own mind on the kinds of good value you want

2. Make behavioural change part of the contribution you want to valuable safety management consultancy

3. Decide on three kinds of evidence you will use to evaluate the kinds of good value you want
e.g. if the emphasis is on analysis, give the same written brief to prospective consultants and listen to their replies; if skilful communication is part of the value you want, you will hear a sample of what each offers

4. Enquire what kind of guarantee they believe makes sense for the kind of work you have in mind - and check to what extent the guarantee will really contribute to the value you want.

5. Be fair: control any tendency towards 'scope creep on the part of your own organisation. Effective purchase of professional services starts with a clear and truthfulindication of what you really want and/or an indication of what you are unsure about. On occasions when there has been some dissatisfaction on the part of a client in the 25 years I've been working in consultancy, I've always been more than willing to discuss their concerns. Usually, the discussion then dissolves or resolves their problems; as far as I can recall, when it doesn't, they've either been unable or unwilling to deal with an internal problem that was not part of the consultancy and/or wanted more than they paid for added on free.

Good afternoon

You need to employ someone who will help you identify your business needs instead of telling you what you need, assuming all mandatory components are complied with.
They will offer advice and guidance and help you to understand the reasons why you have to do things.
They will have the ability to coach the best out of you without you knowing you are doing it.
They will help you to recognise and see the benefits to your business through good h&s management.
How do you know all this?
-Personal references
-Competency checks
-Initial meeting and feeling
-Proven track record
Don't let them blind you with marketing brochures, big words and "catch" phrases and steer clear of consultants who want money up front!

Why steer clear of consultancies who want some money up front?

I often used to ask for about 50% up front because when you had dug them out the 'pile', some would take for ever to pay up. It is very annoying and costly to be forever chasing your fees.

Edward

HSE produce a simple leaflet called "Need help on health & safety" that gives some advice on this subject. You can find it here:

http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg322.pdf

For an excellent consultancy, have a look at www.phoenixhsc.co.uk - no upfront charges, simple paperwork and testimonials from happy clients on the website.

Kind regards

Nick

Hi Edward.

Have you considered accessing the IOSH Register of Safety and Health Consultants as a starting point.
