Posted By Martyn Hendrie BS 7121 requires a competent person to be appointed to plan, organise and supervise any crane lift. (the Appointed Person) If you intend planning the crane operation yourself your question would suggest that you think again, and possible go for a "contract lift." This is where another person (usually the crane company)takes on the duties and responsibilities of planning organising and carrying out the lifts. It is more expensive than simply hiring in a crane.
