Posted By Paul D Could anyone please tell me what the maximum pressure is before a washdown gun becomes a HP washdown gun, I was hoping we could regulate our system to a much lower pressure that will still do the job effectively without having to order up the special boots and helmets etc, as we work overseas and ordering stuff can take months to arrive, any advice would be appreciated, thankyou.

Posted By George Wedgwood Paul, have a look at http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg68.pdfwhere you will find basic information on water washers. The thing is, anything that will discharge energy to clean a surface, has the ability to do damage to a person as well, if accidentally misused. The risk assessment and subsequent safe working procedure for operators is all about preventing this and assuring you that cleaning is done safely, in a sensible environment, also taking account of any environmental concerns regarding run-off. Clothing must be appropriate to the assessment and several different types of cleaner will require diferent types of PPE. i.e. a steam generator will require higher temperature resistant clothing and all will require impact resistant face shields as well as goggles worn underneath. For cleaning vehicles, a specially constructed wash bay is very useful, with a elevated platform (with suitable edge protection) to reach the high parts and a concrete run-off base which discharges into a separator tank. Additionally, have a read of http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg231.pdfwhich deals with associated electrical risks and requirements for the supply to be fitted with a RCD etc. I have a sample procedure which I will mail you directly. Regards, George
