I completed the IOSH Managing Safely course about 5 years ago.

Since then, I have moved companies, and now my Director wants me to take on the role as "competent person"

I am happy and confident to do so, and I know some of it depends on experience etc, but am I qualified enough? Do I need a refresher?

Is there any better training I could ask for? Short of the full blown NEBOSH (I don't think she would allow that!!)

She is also a little in the dark about requirements and legislation. Does anybody know of a website that has some definitive text as to what the companies and my responsibilities are?

Answer to this depends really on what your company does and how big it is. If it is a small office based company employing say 10 people then it might be. If it is a large heavy industry employing 100's then no.

Can you give us a little more detail?

Small company. 20 employees, half office based, the other half in fibreglass manufacturing and despatch.

you probably know what you are doing and talking about. Do you keep up with CPD ? I think that is the real measure of a "competent" person.

the managing safely course is an excellent introduction as to the H+S proceedures required. However, it is quite general and certainly not specific to the fibreglass industry. You may well be competent to carry out RA'S etc in an office environment but I would suggest that you will need "expert" knowledge or advice from a 3rd party re the hazarads and risks involved in your factory in relation to fibreglass, dust, solvents, explosive atmospheres, flammables, storage, ventilation, cutting tools, manual handling, etc etc etc.

Get hold of as much literature as you can from the HSE website and then explain that you either need more training or help. NEBOSH cert then diploma is the way to go, but British Safety Council and others also offer similar levelled courses and are as good.

It might open her eyes to the full requirements and she might also realise how little of it she is actually doing at present.

by the way CPD is continual professional developement. Its like a hobby but not as interested to us IOSH members!!
