For me, our choices of behaviour depend on the probable consequences of that behaviour. We speed on the roads because we will probably save some time. Coming in to towns we slow down because there will probably be a few speed cameras.

Evolutionary ? Back in the old days we ganged up in families or tribes because that gave us a better chance of hunting down game or of beating off the neighbours. And a higher statistical likelihood of having sex with someone.

I very much doubt that there was ever a specific genetic mutation. Perhaps a combination. I would think it more a case of the development of social psychology.

Since self-awareness evolved, the order of importance has been : self, sexual partner, children, family, tribe.

Works for me.
