Can anyone shed any light on how buoyant the contract market is for freelance safety advisors/consultants at present.

Unfortunately trying to gauge any constructive feedback from the agencies out there is quite frustrating. (They seem more like estate agents these days!)

I am looking to make the jump in the very near future but am not to keen in using an agency that will get me 3 months work and then nothing after that.

Would also be like to hear from any expats who are working as freelance abroad as well if possible as this is another option I am considering

Regards

Gary

I set up on my own nearly 2 years ago and have never looked back. Have a look through some of the other threads on this forum as there is lots of good advice out there to people in your position. It depends on your geographical location a bit I guess as well as the areas in which you plan to work. It can take some time to get work through from the Agencies and some of them will promise lots and deliver little, others will be really good. It can be very frustrating at the start but I'm so glad I made the move.

Best of luck

If you specialise in a particular area e.g. Asbestos, it may be worth contacting other consultancies on a sub basis, alternatively visiting your local IOSH branch can also be another way of get those all important first couple of clients.

Have you also contacted your local chamber of commerce and made your details known.

The very best of luck for the future.

I think that if you are willing to travel and work pretty much full time on low day rates (albeit a fair amount when all added up) you should be OK. Obviously this depends on qualifications, experience and consultancy tact.

If you are looking to develop your own B2B consultancy it is a slightly different ball game and probably more competitive.

Much may depend on your cost base and what you can accept as a minimum.

Good luck
