Posted By Stephen Sherratt Hi we are a medium size company and I have prepared a plan for the ban along with a policy signage and given the board a couple of options to think on.
My boss tells me not to order the signs (I have them already!) as "we are to receive signage free of charge from the government"!
Can anyone confirm that signs (presumably one size fits all) are indeed free of charge and where can they be obtained from?
Forgive me if I appear sceptical but surely if they are indeed free and more importantly on time it will be a first for this government ?

Posted By Malcolm Greenhouse smokefreeengland.co.uk/resources is where you can order and download signs. I have my free signs already following a presentation by the local council enforcing officers who provided the information as to where to order the signs. They took 2-3 weeks to arrive but that may have extended as the operative date approaches.
Whilst on the subject does anyone have an opinion on whether the ban extends to the communal areas of blocks of flats?

Posted By alan noble It was my understanding that, unlike Scotland, communal areas such as stairwells, lifts, foyers, passageways would have to be smoke free. The English regs. seem to make it quite clear and state
"Private accommodation 3. —(1) A private dwelling is not smoke-free except for any part of it which is—
(a) used in common in relation to more than one set of premises (including premises so used in relation to any other private dwelling or dwellings); or"
However interestingly the FAQs on Smokefree England are not that clear. May be someone has realised that enforcing the regs in communal areas is going to be tricky! Who do you make responsible for ensuring a block of flats are smoke free.
You should contact your local LA Environmental Health for clarification.

Posted By jackw. Here in Scotland prior to the ban environmental health officers did road shows explaining the regs and how to comply with them. They also gave out packs full of information including fre signs.
Check with them for free stuff.

Found this in Smokefree England info pack "Everything you need to prepare for..." so communal areas do have to be smoke free.
PRIVATE DWELLINGS In general, the new law does not cover private dwellings. However, any enclosed or substantially enclosed part of a premises shared with other premises, such as a communal stairwell or lift in a block of flats, will be required to be smokefree if:
It is open to the public It is used as a place of work, for example, by a cleaner, postman or security guard.
The law does not require self-contained residential accommodation for temporary or holiday use (for example, holiday cottages or caravans) to be smokefree. The owners, however, may choose to make the accommodation smokefree.
Anyone who visits private dwellings as part of their work, for example delivering goods, or providing services such as plumbing, building or hairdressing, can download further guidance at smokefreeengland.co.uk/resources
