Hi

I have a reasonable background in general H&S to date but feel I would like to move into the area of occupational hygiene. Can anyone give me advice on the qualifications required and experience necessary. To be honest, although I like the idea of being an occupational hygienist I am not fully aware of the scope of the work and educational route to be taken.

Advice from anyone in the field especially welcomed.

Check out the BOHS website: http://www.bohs.org/standardTemplate.aspx

If you follow the link to examinations, you will find details of the courses you could take.

Mike,

If you go ahead you won't regret it. As Paul stated contact BOHS. Alternative routes are Portsmouth, Manchester, or Greenwich MSc's as these can be done through distance learning.

Once you have done the academic qualifications then you need experience to do the BOHS certificate and diploma orals; if you can pass these you can do hygiene! It is best to get work at a company where you are not the sole hygienist as you need mentoring in your early stages.

Regards and Best of Luck

Hi

Thanks for the direction and words of encouragement, BOHS does seem to have the monopoly on training courses, the universities deliveing distance learning appear to be out for me as i am only educated to diploma level and they require a relevant degree as entry level to a degree in occupational hygiene.

Can anyone recommend training providers for these BOHS courses?

I am especially interested in any BOHS training course providers in the north or south of Ireland?? I am based in N Ireland and it looks like it will be very expensive to attend the required courses and pay examination fees, without having to pay for flights and accommodation each time as well.

The BOHS Secretariat can tell you more about course providers; the telephone number is on the website.

Have recieved quotes for necessary training, cost of around £9k for courses then add flights, accomidation and grub.

Is there really no other way of getting into this field??

Ouch!! You don't have to take the courses to call yourself a hygienist but they will definitely help! If you can get a job as a trainee hygienist (personal circumstances allowing), your new employer would cover the cost of the training (which is how I did it over 20 years ago).

Hi Mike. I entered the distance learning MSc at Manchester with a NEBOSH Diploma/experience entry so it is possible to get on without a Batchelors degree.

I did it some years ago and the Course director has now left so I have no idea of the current quality. My previous experience as a H&S professional stood me in very good stead as I already understood many of the concepts although the hygienists on the course had a much better grasp of some of the practical aspects of Occ Hygiene.

I am absolutely certain that the knowledge gained during that period of study has made me a better H&S practitioner.

Best advice has already been given - speak to BOHS. Also suggest you find a local Hygienist (BOHS should be able to help) and pick their brains.

Good luck.
