Hi Tracey

Roll on Saturday!

The answer to your query is yes. You do need a license...but I can't remember where you get it from. Talk to the providers of the equipment. They should be able to tell you.

I would have thought that this depends on the equipment being used. For example, the low power "walkie-talkies" that you can buy over the counter are licence free. They may not, however, be sufficiently powerful for your particular needs. (They are generally very cheap though!)

If you are hiring the radios, the licence (if required) normally comes with them. Or at least it used to when I hired them.

My turn to be the hurt minority for once... God has a capital "G" (sorry, but it is Friday *wink*)

Hi Tracey,
It's probably best to contact Ofcom (www.ofcom.org.uk) on this one.

As above, the hire company can normally arrange the license. Beware of the "cheap" PMR446 radios that are licencse free as they have low power output and range. They are also not up to heavy use.

A better option would be to hire sets on a UK General license for the period you require. These will operate on VHF or UHF frequencies. These will have a better output and range and can also be weather proof. Do you need to use them in ATEX zones (flammables nearby?). You should also look at getting recharging stations, otherwise it can be a bit of a waste when all sets are sitting with flat batteries. If you specifically need digital (for security of information), then this will be more expensive than standard radios which can be coded to restrict access.

A company I've used in the past is http://www.belmont-coms.com . Although they are based near Aberdeen, they will hire sets and despatch them to wherever you need them. They do a lot of work for the oil industry, and will give good advice on what would be suitable. Ask for John.
