Question.

I have a commercial property in Cornwall, which has a radon level of 415Bq/m3.

Technically, this makes me a radiation employer, and required to appoint a RPA and comply with the IRR.

Practically though, I will do some basic building remedial works that will ensure the radon levels fall below the action level, and re-measure annually.

For the c 3 months it will take to get the building works completed, does anyone think it's worth me appointing an RPA?

Catch 22 slightly, but the Environment Agency are unlikely to be interested in making you to comply with something that will only last 3 months - assuming they believe your remedial actions will happen, and will work.

...but... asking them might mean that they look at why you haven't done so already (I met one very overzealous type a few years back, and I think he would have liked this).

This is a response/question so I am prepared to be shot down in flames.

I have been an RPS many years ago so I'm a bit rusty, but I was under the impression that naturally occurring radiation (in this case radon from granite I presume?) does not fall into the hard and fast rules of radiation protection. If there is something quick and easy (reasonably practicable as opposed to practicable) then I would do it but to go down the route of appointing RPA's and RPS's is a bit extreme. The local tea shops will probably need the same and most homes in parts of Cornwall would fall into this category.

A view from the HSE (notoriously reluctant to make a non-general statement) would really be of use here!

Rob,
Good point. There's nothing in the regs. to suggest a flexible approach, and I certainly don't intend to appont an RPA - I know I will technically be in breach - but the level of risk is pretty low.

As you say, there are 1000's of other businessin the area. Will the HSE give some guidance on this? I haven't been able to find anything.

I confess I haven't read this, but does this not answer your question?
