Keith,

not many things are 'banned', and Mercury isn't subject to a general prohibition. Schedule 2 of COSHH is where you would look for prohibitions. However, many organisations have moved to mercury-free, because its fairly nasty, cumulative, and should be substituted where it possibly can. It may be that the NHS, or your local Trust, has a ban on Mercury,

The report was on the BBC News website (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/6725161.stm) concerning the forthcoming European ban on the manufacture and sale of mercury containing equipment. It particularly mentioned barometers - pity that the accompanying picture showed non-mercury aneroid barometers! I believe that there is special dispensation regarding clinical equipment.

haven't read anything it about it yet but there was a discussion on the radio last week (Jeremy Vine show at lunchtime)about some sort of ban. It seemed to emanate from Brussels but unfortunately I didn't hear the start of it so I'm not too sure at what stage it is at or if it is aimed at "industry" or the general public.

One individual they had on was an antiques dealer and he was concerned about the impact on his business as they were unable to export antique barometers to the USA just now because of a similar ban there.

Sorry can't give any more information than that.

There is an EC directive banning the use of liquid mercury in thermometers and barometers in development at the moment.

That's going to be interesting. Does that mean when the ban on ordinary bulbs is a done thing, and we're all supposed to use the "energy efficient" types, that they will not work because the mercury has been "removed"
Or maybe they will be banned as well....and we'll all be in the dark ?
