Posted By Martin Taylor Not sure if I am allowed to ask this here but I have been google searching for somw tiome trying to find a company in the North East - Newcastle to York - ideally Teesside - that puts on the BOHS P405 Asbestos course and have struggled to find anything. There must be companies given the heavy industrial basis of the area. Can anybody give me a tip on where I might find a course thanks Martin

Posted By Paul Leadbetter Martin Try BOHS: www.bohs.org; I think they can tell you the course providers. Paul

Posted By Terry J Hall Martin Try UKASL.co.uk - they do the P405 course in the North East. Be aware though that P405 is not asbestos "Awareness" as your message heading suggests - this is the full monty training course for the management of asbestos in premises.

Posted By Adrian Watson P405 is not for the management of asbestos in buildings, it is for the management of asbestos works. Regards Adrian

Posted By Terry J Hall According to BOHS the aim of the P405 course is ..."to provide a practical knowledge and the skills to be able to manage asbestos in buildings and to provide a basic knowledge of asbestos removal procedures". Hope this clears up any confusion. Regards

Posted By JPK Hi Martin, I had a little problem findng one local, and as it turned out, so did everyone on the course. I and another from London, we had a Welshman, a Scot and 3 guys from Devon all taking the course in Norfolk! All members of the course stayed locally for the duration. Maybe this is something you will have to consider. JPK

Posted By Martin Taylor Thanks all - I am a little concerned now that maybe I have not picked the right course - I picked this as recommended on the site a couple of months ago. I am the HS manager for 2 sites with fairly extensive asbestos in roof work and cladding etc. We are already engaged in replacing roofing tiles and recognise that ongoing work on both sites will be an essential part of safety management. I ahve very little asbestos expertise (nebosh knowledge basically) and want to make sure that I and a couple of colleagues are bang on the mark in managing the current asbestos load, deciding when to strip out and when to leave alone, managing site operations to avoid touching ACMs and then managing contractors in removal as required. For those who have done the course please advise if P405 is suitable or too detailed. Thanks Martin

Posted By Robert K Lewis Terry BOHS actually states It provides the student with the practical knowledge and skills to be able to oversee both licensable and non-licensable asbestos work and gives a knowledge base to audit asbestos removal projects. I do not see it as the general asbestos awareness programme set out in CAR 2006. I think any organisation selling P405 on this basis is going top encounter some very confused delegates. It is totally unsuitable, in my view, for the relative novice. This seems to yet another case of overselling. A bespoke Asbestos Managers course under CAR is likely to be the best option in Martin's situation. This is precisely the option most of my clients go forward with. Bob

Posted By Gerard Keane Martin, I have done the 405 course which was very informative and has enhanced my abilities when managing asbestos removals. However, I had experience of asbestos works and looking after the asbestos register for a number of non domestic premises, which helped as the 405 exam includes inspection of an asbestos removal site set up, writing an action plan amongst other things. If you have no experience of asbestos removals/works you could find the course hard going. You should already have a register of where your Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) are (Regulation 4 - Duty to Manage for non domestic premises) and also an asbestos management plan (AMP), which goes into objectives, resposibilities, material and priority assessments, permit to work, guidance for contractors and emergency procedures amongst other things. As for managing removal contractors, most UKAS accredited analysts who you will need to hire to conduct a 4 stage clearance do offer to manage the removal works at a price, however you could work alongside them to gain experience for when you do it yourself. If you want a copy of my AMP just to see what's in it, then let me know and I will email you a copy or if you want a quick chat about it then send me your contact number. Regards Ged

Posted By Doug Kelly Martin My understanding is that now there are two 'asbestos management' courses available via BOHS P405 - Management of Asbestos in Buildings P406 - Supervision & Management of Safe Removal of Asbestos From the outline of your duties, you probably need relatively in-depth knowledge afforded by both of these (certainly the former regarding REG 4 duties - the latter may be preferrable to buy in). I have heard good things about UKASL and AAA Training - I recommend you speak to them about your requirements.
