Posted By Saracen11 Good afternoon colleagues.
I am interested in hearing the experiences from other Safety Practitioners with regard to the above.
It is a National review taking place in all LA's. The private sector may also do the same?

Posted By MT Are you having Single Status implemented within your LA?
It was meant to be implemented here approx 1 year ago, but since some employees were to face a significant cut in salary, proposed strike action meant that the LA went back to the drawing board.
Under the new proposals, I will be slightly better off re basic salary, however essential car users allowance is being axed and replaced with a monthly allowance based on the total miles travelled in the previous year along with an increased mileage rate, which means that I will lose over £200 per year on reimbursement for use of my car by the LA which I am very unhappy about.

Posted By Linda Westrupp Yes, we too are going through the single status experience. It was supposed to be done by June last year, having taken 3 years so far, but was held up by the equal pay issue which meant playing a wait and see game. At present the unions seem to have agreed the general scheme but none of us have been told yet what our new grades/salaries will be. I think we are going to be asked to vote on the general scheme before being told the specifics and I am not sure I agree with that. There has been a warning that there will be winners and losers. I think most of the NHS has now finished their exercise on this issue but there appear to be enormous differences between them and in different part so of the country. As far as I can see this will lead to even more differences in pay and conditions throughout the country than there were before and the exercise would have been better as a national not local exercise, but that's just a personal opinion.

Posted By Saracen11 Hi Linda. I understand it is being done Nationally?
I am meeting with other Practitioners this week to discuss our next move... watch this space!

There are many many cases where staff have lost thousands
I have yet to come across a situation where a proper job analysis has been undertaken to appraise the situation
In my experience the main problem is that very few have any idea what a H&S practitioner does nor the competence needed and the role is not seen as a kudos role

Posted By MT Single Status is being implemented nationally in the sense that every local authority is compelled to implement it, however terms and conditions as well as rates of pay are differing considerably between authorities. I agree with Linda that it should have been truly national, in that consistent rates should be established for the same job. After all, why should my counterparts in a different LA some 30 miles from here be paid more than me for the same job?
As per the previous poster's comments, after discussions with colleagues, none of us know who was actually interviewed to establish what our job entails and what level of skill and knowledge is required, so we are at a loss as to how the powers that be arrived at the salary points for our job.

Posted By David Hurst Has anyone been given an indication of scale points yet? I understand that salary will be dependant upon the pot of money each individual authority has, but am more concerned (at the minute) with scale points. I would have thought that it would have been sensible to have had Nationally agreed points for Safety Advisors.

Posted By Bob Thompson CMIOSH Yes we too are undergoing appraisal. The problem is that the original salary scales were based around a construction health and safety officers role from 1987. This of course did not take into account the practitioner role or its interaction with all management functions. But we have IIP now so that will make all the difference..............................................................
I dont think Bob

Posted By MT Yes, our Single Status scheme has been agreed and finalised and the terms and conditions will come into force on 1 July, with pay being backdated to 1 January, although apparently as it's only been around 5 years in the offing, it's come as a surprise to the payroll department, who will apparently need until around October to pay us the backdated pay.
Jobs have been grouped into "families", with grades in each. For example mine is Grade I within the Technical family, and whereas there used to be 4 spinal points within the grade, there are now only 2. You so start in this job on the first point, go to the second point and you're stuck there for evermore.
