Posted By craig b hartley Does anyone know of any guidance for mobile workers, in relation to proof of understanding toolbox talks. we run a system where our mobile workers read 1 per week and sign and date it, but how would we know if they understand the content?

Ask them spicific Questions pertaining to the tool box content...if the operative connot comment then you will know if it has been read and understood

Posted By craig b hartley thx garry with over 600 hundred drivers, would sampling cover this,or if there was guidance at the bottom of the document telling them if they don't understand any of it to contact the safety team for further training?

I attended a court case where the employee was found not to be able to read properly even though they held down a hazardous job - so relying on somebody reading a memo etc as against using a proper communication process where understanding is explored is probably not good enough

Posted By Garry Adams Craig With such an extensive work force,yes as a consideration, I would run a feasability study and implement a randum survey, this lottery may incourage operatives to participate...not knowing when the may called upon to reiterate the toolbox content may induce compliance.

At some point prior to Toolbox talks your staff should have received more formal training. What would be good is to obtain feedback from that training i.e. completing a Q+A sheet. This should give you an awareness of individuals capacity to understand and learn. From this you will be able to identify anyone with any learning/comprehension difficulties for whom toolbox talks may not be suitable. If you are confident that all the workforce have a good level of learning ability (and are able to produce evidence) then a signature of attendance and understanding at toolbox talks would be reasonable.
This is my own personal opinion and is the route that I would take.
