Posted By Kevin Maguire Here is some of my Background any help and advice would be extremely helpful. I have just recently sent in a application for Scotweld. The position I am applying for is Track worker I have a love of problem solving and as a lot of you know track worker's are required more for Braun than Brain. I have a keen interest in Health and Safety and as I have spent the last 2 year's working in the Rail Industry it looks to be my best source of paying for my NEBOSH course's and hopefully a Junior Health and Safety position in the Rail Industry when I am done.
However my main concern is my age I am only 20, I know which the amount of effort I am capable of putting into my career I could over come any Stereotype's put on my age, However I still lack on the life experience's of others looking to start in Health and Safety.
Would this be a major issue?
Also as i mentioned before I am applying for a Job with Scotweld they have Requested my Medical form is this required from Rail a firm now I understand that a Drug's and alcohol test taking within the last 12 Month's is Required and I have that although I have no Medical form Although it specifies my Medical as Valid on my PTS.

Posted By Alan Haynes Re - medical certificate.
If you already have a PTS Card, your Sponsor [employer] must have issued a medical certificate for you to get the PTS. [It may well have been part of your pre-employment medical]. So ask your existing employer for a copy of the certificate.

Posted By Kevin Maguire Thank's for the reply, I did my medical as a pre employment Medical and Drugs and Alcohol test 2.5 Years ago with Vital Resources since the office closed down, I then moved to another firm who only requested I do a Drugs and Alcohol Test (this was before the 12 month rule came into force) Now they request a Medical also which make's me wonder if a valid Medical Certificate need's to be presented prior to employment?

Forget about age,,,you just need to be asking yourself why you want to have career as a health and safety proffesional? Once you can answer this question to your own satisfaction, then you can tell others when you go to interviews.
If they like what they hear, you'll get the job, if they don't then you won't and you'll have to try again :-)

Posted By Tabs Kevin, with age comes experience; and cynicism; and other distractions such as family, mortgage etc.
It may well be that 20 years old is the ideal time for you to start this career. Certainly you will need an enthusiasm and drive to be good at H&S.
For every bad reason there is probably two good reasons to start young. My advice would be to go for it, and accept the funny looks from time to time.
I studied H&S at Uni and one of the school levers on our course (he was 17) is now my matrix manager in a large organisation here in the City (he has far more drive than me, lol).
Good luck

Posted By Alan Haynes You say that .."Vital Resources no longer have my original medical certificate.". Does this mean they still have a photocopy?
If so - your new employer may well accept a copy, as long as Vital Rail certify it is 'true copy' of the original.
As to your age - don't worry!

Posted By SeanThompson Hi Kev,
Try and get enrolled on the NEBOSH cert when you can, if you haven't already.
By doing this it helped me to get my break 9 months ago, i am now starting the diploma in September funded by my employer.
I am 22 so don't let the age thing bother you.

Posted By Kevin Maguire Thank's that a huge help knowing that my age wont be too much of a issue as my ideal company would be one I can being a career I will apply to firm's looking to recruit and train people in my situation I am hoping to get on a NEBOSH General Cert as soon as possible.
On a second note Vital Resource's have no employment record for me, I would imagine this is not a ordinary situation and my information was lost when the office I worked for was closed.
