Hi,
This can't be a stupid question (cf DRB thread) 'cos no one seems to know the answer - or the rest of the world is asleep...
Don't know about the 'world' but they appear to be used in US and Aus, so probably are an international standard.

ISO 3864 specifies international standards for safety symbols. These labels are graphical, to overcome language barriers. There is an alternative American standard, ANSI Z.535, which is incompatible with the international standard. The ANSI standard requires an accompanying text, which can pose problems for environments in which people expected to understand the sign may not read the language or may not read at all, including many workplaces in the USA.
