Posted By Tracey C We have moved to new premises and the powers that be have decided they would like CCTV in access and egress areas (we share the building). If we decide to install CCTV do we need to inform staff where the cameras are or can we just put some signage up stating that CCTV is in operation in that area.
I know that the people working at our head office don't particularly like signage and would prefer not to put any signage up at all on the above matter, can anybody advise me if this is ok or against any Data Protection?

The Data Protection Act will require your staff to be informed but this does not necessarily mean signs. However, if memnbers of the public could be recorded, then signs should be fitted.
Polite signs saying this is for your own protection etc usually go down well.
Don't forget to register the CCTV with the data protection people. The Data Protection Act requires some questions to be answered regarding the keeping of recorded images etc.
The only time you can get away from notifying anyone is obviously where you are trying to detect a crime as it happens. But if they knew there were cameras about in the first place, then perhaps they may keep their sticky fingers in their pockets.
