Hi All

I've been asked to deliver a lecture on the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations.

I'm a great believer in providing examples of good and bad practice. Can anyone think of any cases where the competent person relied upon by the company was found to be not so competent when challenged in court.

I've had excellent feedback, when I've asked for the difference between competent person and expert witness on this forum.

Thanks in advance.

I know it isn't health and safety but in a similar scenario - that doctor who acted as an expert witness (which is what your competant person technically is for your company) in the cases involving women alledgedly murdering their children. He was the "competant" person for the police in these investigations but didn't actually have a clue.

Also a similar case of a forensic analyst working for police and conning them out of thousands - when he didn't even have an a-level!

Can't remember the names of either but both have a relevance when you consider their relationship with the police. Google!

A bit off track this one but how about the asbestos samples checked by a Glasgow firm some of which either weren't done or were inaccurate, never found out the end result in that case. It caused massive problems for some local authorities.
