I'm having a few issues on-site regarding the standard of scaffold boards, namely splits in boards. I have kindly been furnished with EN 12810, 12811 and BS 2482 however none of them actually explicitly states what is permissible and what is not.

I'm of the opinion that if a crack of a serious nature/size appears then remove the offending board but when dealing with contractors who will argue until the proverbial come home I need to be able to throw the black and white up in front of them.

Also what is the status of banding cut boards. I am aware that there is an onus on the scaffolders to use only banded boards as per BS2482, but what is the norm with regards to cut boards? Is it ok for the contractor to band them on site or do them have to be done by an external approved company?

I am anxious to get this dealt with asap as I am quiet worried so would appreciate it greatly if any info could be passed on.

Kind Regards,

Kevin

There are two standards for scaffold boards, BSEN Standard and Non-Standard. Should a board not meet the Standard then it is defective. BS boards have no significant splits or other defects which would render them weak. Re-banding a cut board is not permitted, these boards would not comply to the Standard.

The non-standard boards have more supporting transoms (1.2m for 38mm boards) This is marked on the end hoops.

The black and white is your letter to the contractor which would state, get it right or we get another contractor and report this to the National Scaffolding Contractors Association, if they are members.

True, but I still need the facts before a substantial move like having a long standing contractor removed. Plus I will need the info for any potential new contractor should the above happen.

Where I am working the BS is not much use - because of the heat they last roughly three months - if you are lucky. I have noticed however that many boards were below the standard on delivery - already showing signs of cracks - to many knots - warped etc. We have however started to buy in the OSHA board - same sizes. The board is a laminate - takes a lot more "punishment" doesn't crack in the heat - doesn't warp. I don't know whether they are available in UK . We import ours form New Zealand

F.A.O. Andrew Joule Land.

Could you give me a Breif Summary Profile on the, OSHA Board ?. It would be interesting to compare and contrast with the standard boards currently in service.

I was particularly interested in your comments on the thermal resistance. The environmental conditions within certain locations of a Power Station can contort a Scaffolding board to the point of Un-Servisable when subjected to extreme heat ( even when lashed or limpets are applied to the board )

Regards, Garry...
