I am helping out a friend by allowing his son to spend 2 weeks at our office as a part of his school project and work experience, I have informed my insurance and they want a risk assessment.

I have never carried out a risk assessment for a young person so I wouldn’t even know where to start; all I know is that they do need special consideration. He`ll be working in 6 station office with general office equipment.
I would be grateful if someone could point me to the right direction or anything else that could help me with this matter

JEQ,

Email me direct and I will send you a template, for you to complete.

Essentially you will need to have a look at all the potentials hazards he may face and put in place controls and fully explain these to him you must also send his parents a copy of the Risk Assessment.

The links should help, but dont forget the less obvious. Having just completed a young persons assessment for a female on construction site, bullying, indimidation, bad/offensive language, being set unreasonable tasks and demeaning tasks are all hazards that could contribute to the overall risk of stress/health problems.

What is a laugh and joke in normal office environment could be construed differently by a young person (and not so young - lets not forget) and comments made after work may have consequences.

I strongly concur with the previous poster regarding a young person's understanding of what others may call banter. We had a young man of 16 work in one of our depots who left suddenly. His mother wrote a very strong letter to us regarding how her boy had been tortured by his manager by being teased about his sexuality. The manager said it was not sexual discrimination because he knew he wasn't gay.....? However when the inevitable letter came from their solicitor our insurers advised us to settle as quickly as possible. I now make sure that everyone understands that teasing could be perceived as bullying and that a young person may not have the emotional maturity to handle a bit of "ribbing" the same as an older worker. It cost us a few thousand.

And quite right. One hopes the manager was disciplined and given counselling, the problem obviously lay at his/her end.

Hi, the comments, advice and no doubt the pro-formas sent seem fine. My question is why is the LA education department not involved in the risk assessment and vetting potential work placements. In my LA this is part of the department safety officers duties?

Cheers

Different schools have different arrangements for workplace checks. Sometimes these are carried out by Trident, by Education Business Partnerships, by the schoools or by the children and young peoples services departments.

However the check does not involve doing the risk assessment for you. Google in Cornwall County Council work experience and you will go to their site which has a number of sample risk assessments. The employer will do the risk assessment the workplace check usually involves making sure that the risk assessment is in place

I have a risk assessment for the type of scenario you are referring to if you want to e.mail me direct
