Simon Jenkins in the Guardian has seriously upset HSE.

See http://www.guardian.co.u...olumn/0,,2108745,00.html

Yes, but who is Simon Jenkins and why should I or anybody else care what a bunch of ill-informed journos think about anything? I've got a real job to do, unlike Mr Jenkins,

He seems like one of those journalists who prefer "fluff" to "fact"

If someone doesn't get the point across is less than 2 paragraphs then in my opinion they're just writing for the sake of being a nuisance or they enjoy the sound of their own material.

Despite niggly comments about proper jobs etc Simon has managed to prove the CE of the HSE lacks even a basic sense of humour.

There are lots of ways to word a putdown and the CE certainly hasn't succeeded with his poor (zombie like?) response.

I have no doubts why Peter has put this up and and why am I not surprised by how easy it is to wind H&S professionals up by tongue in cheek articles.

In the case of Journalist Vs Safety Professional there is a clear clash of ideology with it's inherent misunderstandings.

A journalist could write a nice 2 page article on a hole in the ground. And amusing as it may be at the end of the article the hole in ground would be 3 times it's original size, filled with all sorts of vile imaginings and panic and irrationality would ensue.

The safety professional would try and get someone to cove the hole or in the very least get someone to sign saying they will cover the hole.

Saying vs Doing I think is my main point.

This hasnt particularly upset HSE - these responses are par for the course and may have started way back with Jenny Bacon. They are not generally printed by the "news"papers though and i think they've only just been put on HSE website.

The problem is that if you read the responses in the online stories many people are taking what is said by these very funny people as gospel. Then its HSE's fault for circus performers wearing hard hats, banning firemen on stepladders and conkers and slippery floors for clowns etc. which undermines the good work that HSE , on the whole, does.

It's poor journalism.. but it sells papers ant least daily mail readers believe it.

Even if they have to buy the Guardian to read it!

I don't think it is poor journalism and you're guilty of a huge generalisation by saying Daily Mail readers believe it - care to explain what you mean by that comment?

It contains errors of fact, faulty inference and is a bald attempt to jump on a black-top tabloid bandwagon. This may or may not be poor journalism, but it is poor logic, and almost intolerably, dismally, excrutiatingly boring.

I have better things to do with my time than worry about Meldrew's paper tigers,

John

Simon Jenkins is yet another example of a pompous, self-important journo who has probably never done a proper day's work in his life. A bit like that Clarkeson chappie.

I mean, he doesn't even write for a decent paper.......

But you've got time to respond to this John- that's a rhetorical question so I haven't put in a question mark.

I can see Peter laughing up his sleeve!

I'd quite forgotten how bigoted some contributors are when it comes to defending 'their' patch.

Lighten up guys, getting stressed is bad for your H&S!.

PL,
Re: Daily mail comments

I think you've proven your point when you said how easy it is to wind people up.

Yes, I don't understand why people make such silly remarks and tar a whole sector of the population - but I suppose it is to wind people up.
