Can I ask your understanding /opinion on what is the expected behaviour in accident investigations.
If third party equipment is involved in an accident (causing minor injury, but with a high potential) would you expect the equipment owners to isolate that equipment until the company investigating the accident had viewed it or would you expect the equipment owners to undertake there own investigation without informing the investigating company?
Say the equipment was rented out and the injury was to the renting companies employee.

Judgement of Solomon here is both amswers. It is far better to do a joint investigation. Without your input can you really fully value the Hirers report and vice versa. It will save a lot of disagreement in the long run.

I wholeheartedly agree with Bob on this, a joint investigation IMHO would be the ideal situation.
From the point of view of the company whose premises the accident occurred on, I would at the very least want to carryout an investigation to determine, whether the controls (if any) had been implemented as per the various risk assessments, method statements (provided they had been completed)had specified. Were the controls adequate, was the equipment being used by a competent, trained individual (would want to see copies of any training certificates etc), had any pre use checklists (if required) been completed, what impact did/could it have on employees etc, has it been recorded in the accident book, did the contractor record it also, did the company accident procedure work or are there areas for improvement.
I am sure that others will have a different view point, these are just my own observations, as it would demonstrate to both your employees and the contractor company/employees that all accidents / incidents are treated exactly the same, and therefore the company does take H&S of all persons on its premises seriously.

The first thing that comes to mind is that it is not possible to comment without more specific information - I can envision all sorts of scenarios depending on the exact type of equipment and the nature of any contracts between your organisation and the owner of the equipment.
However, the thing that does come to mind is the need to co-operate. Both parties have an interest in any investigation and should therefore share information.
