One of my directors came and asked me whether the employer is liable to pay for the glasses of an employee who drives at work and operates the forklift truck.
The situation is that the employee wears glasses for shortsightedness on a daily basis but he struggles in the glare of the sun and was wondering whether the company had any legal obligation to provide him with reactionary lenses.
I am fully aware of the employer's duties under the VDU regulations but am under the impression that there are no such requirements for driving at work.
Am I correct in thinking this or have I missed something?

Driving at work - Assuming this means road vehicles then he must be capable of driving outside work therefore the risk from glare from the sun combined with short sightedness affecting his ability to drive safely is the same no matter what.
When operating an FLT I suggest you assess whether the task causes other factors such repeatedly driving into the direction of the sun esp from a shaded area where there may be extreme contrast which the eyes have to adjust to.
Work by the Management Regs Risk Assessment and apply the Heirarchy at Schedule 1 before considering PPE.
