Posted By POC Hi All, I need some advice... I am two years into a newly created position however most of the safety initiatives i have tried to implement have been met with a negative response. I.e. awareness of HAVS, Noise induced hearing loss etc Once the employees have been made aware of the dangers/symptoms etc they are going to their doctor and handing in sick lines. My opinion is that this negative attitude is down to poor Industrial relations between the workers and management and both parties are using h&S to get at eachother. Has anyone an opinion on how to overcome this significant hurdle. Thanks Disillusioned!!

Posted By Berg As a starting point I recommend you undertake a review of your Safety and Environmental Management Systems to establish where you stand at the present in compliance terms. Formulate an action plan based these priorities with target dates Job Owners etc. Include apects of Worker Management issues which are affecting H&S compliance and implementation, no names but illustrate the root of the issue if pos. Include line management and employees in the review and establish consultation leading to a structured employee / management process bit by bit. A planned strategy will focus minds and remove existing 'issues' from the equation to an extent. Present it direct to your MD showing the risks and liabilities and your proposals. The ball will be firmly in his court to lead an improvement programme.

Posted By Raymond Rapp Good advice from the previous posting. However, I suspect there are not too many easy solutions and many other practitioners are in the same boat. You may also like to consider implementing a safety climate survey, which should provide some tangible evidence of the prevailing safety culture. It also can provide the workforce with some confidence that management are taking h&s seriously. If you need some advice or help with a climate survey please ask. Good luck. Ray

Posted By Martin Brown Totally agree with the previous response. You need support directly from the top, the MD down, otherwise you will feel that you are continuely going against the tide. It is all about communication keeping all relevant parties involved at each stage, involve others when you are considering in implementing changes or introducing something new (Managing Change). I guess the trick is selling your ideas to address known concerns, maybe let others think they have come up with a solution to a known problem. ATB MartB
