What is the limit of petroleum spirit that can legally be transported in containers on the back of an open vehicle. I think it is stated in litres and a maximum size of containers is specified. Incidentally, it seems that some (if not all) Trading standards Offices are now instructing Garages to restrict sales of petrol into containers to two cans only unless the TSO has formally assessed the purchaser as a genuine organisation and not someone wanting to blow something or someone up. Posted By Bob Youel you should also note 'ADR' as there have been lots of changes lately that affects transport of goods, materials, substances etc ADR is VIP as if you do not adhere to them insurance companies are more stringent re the cover they offer than with general H&S non-compliance issues

Posted By ciara brennan Hi Under adr you can transport 333 litres of petrol without needing any additional plating/placarding/documentation etc... you can however under the carriage of dangerous goods... regs 2004 transport 2000litres if the container is connected directly to the engine (i.e its the fuel tank) hope this is helpful
