Posted By Ian D. This may be Tomorrow’s world stuff or actually out there and readily available. What I am after is thermal heat detector safety beams?? A beam similar to the traditional photocell beam, however if this beam detects a rise in temperature i.e. hand, it stops the machine This will supplement a pull wire, e-stops etc. We can not use traditional beams, as the product on the conveyor is not uniform size. Is anyone out there using any such device? Regards Ian

Posted By Merv Newman I've not come across a thermal detector for this use but have used a magnetic field. The aperture is surrounded by a tailor made cage (plumbers copper piping and fittings will do) Then the field strength is set to allow parts to pass. Variable part size can be a problem but if they are significantly smaller than a human hand this should not be too much of a problem. This said, I do not like "immaterial" barriers. Employees are ingenious people. (we wouldn't employ them otherwise, would we ?) Short circuiting the safeties used to be just a question of a bit of bent wire or some chewing gum. Nowadays you wouldn't believe what they can do with 2 yards of multi-strand fibre optic cable ! Or a judiciously placed magnet. Merv

Posted By Ian D. Thank you Merv for the response, the material passing through would be steelwire so magnetic fields may be a problem. In my minds eye this device would be in front of a tunnel guards or similar and would allow inert cool objects to pass through, but detect the heat from a hand / gloved hand and stop the machine. This would be a line of defense before pullwires and e-stops. As you can tell, we are in the ideas stage but if you don't push the boundaries?? As for ingenious workers, I used to work underground and you would not believe what the metal nose piece from the dust mask could defeat Thanks for the response Regards Ian

Posted By Merv Newman Ian, if you are talking about straight lengths of wire of differing diameters then the magnetic field can be adjusted to allow a minimum "dead spot" Anything in that spot would not be detected and can pass. If however you have bits bent into odd shapes then it wouldn't work. Fundamental question : why would they need to put their hand in there anyway ? If it is to "clear a jam" then your real problem could be "how do we stop it jamming ?" Which is a problem for the production people. Not for safety. Pass the monkey. Merv

Posted By Chris Pope Look up sawstop on google for an amazing circular saw that won't cut your hands off. Video demo using a hot dog. Not in the UK yet although Axminster power tools are talking with them at the moment

Posted By Ian D. Hi Merv It is coiled wire of various lengths, up to 1.5m, these are bent and coiling so would not be uniform when entering the machine. Machine jams are not a problem we will have interlocks and isolation systems so the machine has to be isolated. My concern is that the wire catches onto the clothing or gloves of the operator who has he feed in the wire into the machine and drags his hand / arm into the tunnel guard. We can design in pull wires or extra large e-stops. I was just wondering if any new technology was available? Chris the sawstop looks fantastic piece of kit, but uses a device that catches or locks onto the blade. It would bot work with a chopper. Regards Ian
