Posted By S Ward Can anyone point me in the direction of guidance documents that spell out the requirements for welding screens. We have welders on site that say that screens are not required if people are kept >3m away from the welding operation and I would like to verify/refute this. I have looked at INDG297 Safety in Gas Welding... but there does not appear to be any mention of screens. Thanks in advance Simon

Posted By Jane Blunt Gas welding does not give off ultraviolet light, and hence you do not require screens for that purpose. The welder does require eye protection. Arc welding on the other hand gives off plenty of ultraviolet light. If you Google 'welding curtains' you will find some links to well-known suppliers who will be able to advise you. Jane

Posted By Bob Youel depending on what is being welded e.g. stainless steel / aluminum processes are much brighter than mild steel, the *size of the weld being undertaken and the process being used different risks [arc / glare etc] are present For general mild steel type site arc welding [2.5 mm] un blocked safety distances re the arc are only short for small works however glare is a different risk and needs different considerations Carrying around some kind of 'proprietary' glare shield can be more risky than not having the shields. Use of the fire watcher as a shield can acomplish two jobs in one and keeping other staff away helps [*Size = a competent welding engineer will explain]
