Posted By Mick H I have been tasked with undertaking a risk assessment and the formulation of a suitable safe system(s)of work for the following -
'Engineers undertaking the installation, maintenance and servicing of fire detection/alarm systems and portable fire fighting eqpt within customers roof spaces'
These premises can range from domestic properties through to commercial and public buildings. I understand the risk assessment process, but am finding it difficult to identify practical control measures that my staff can adopt, which will allow them to continue with this work, but operate safely and within the relevant legislation.
I contacted the HSE Helpdesk with this one - their response was to quote the relevant legislation, which is fine, but I need practical solutions.
If anyone has had similar activities to assess, I would be glad of any assistance on this one.

Your really only going to be able to generically assess the most basic of tasks; by your own admission, you are dealing with a huge cross section of locations, no doubt geographically as well; as such specifics are the order of the day.
What of the client in non domestic situations Mick? I assume they require SSOW from you in most instances; again, by assumption I would imagine you are looking at each contract to price it accordingly, this therefore is the ideal opportunity to specifically assess what difficulties there may be, perhaps focusing more on the MS supported by the RA, this way if your control measures on a generic RA don't work, then this can be easily rectified; call it regular reviewing of the RA. It is a case that 'one cap' just won't fit all.
Best wishes

Posted By Alison WR Safe means of accessing the loft - ie take a variety of ladders
Working alone, or in pairs?
Equipment to allow them to move about safely in an unboarded loft - either home made, or something like the safety trellis system
Safe lighting / head torches
Asbestos recognition training
Training to recognise non-compliant wiring
PPE against MMMF, pigeon debris, etc
Precautions against getting locked-in, or ladder being removed/knocked away.

Posted By GARRY WIZZ I have the same sort of problem.
got my generic RA but the SSOW includes a tick box question sheet that the operative has to complete on site.
If he comes up with a no answer then he has to ring me on my mobile.
We have a chat which gives me a much better picture.
I may say no access at which point the engineer(s) manager get a tad excited.
Having p*****d them off a few times they are now starting to plan the work.

Posted By bob safe Can't comment on every aspect of this but bob suggests you look at plastic scaffolding boards instead of timber batons as crawl boards - non-conductive and no splinters, can be cut and caps inserted to retain structural strength. Also very cheap, happy to provide any further help if you email me.
