We are currently going through a phase of getting accidents reported to our first aiders (who complete the initial report form) the day after the event. All staff are aware of the need to report accidents and get necessary treatment immediately- this is briefed out at induction and we have rebriefed this point on numerous occasions.

I would welcome your comments on how we deal with these. I am tempted not to include them in our accident figures if a quick investigation reveals no witnesses as we are just taking the individuals word that something happened- the injury could have happened off site. I am also tempted to discipline the next person who reports in this way (after briefing again!) as it is a failure to follow safety procedure.

Thoughts please!

get up to speed re 'Social Security' law re accident recording/reporting before you move to reprimand people

You can use the term 'alleged' accident in your own notes where there are no witnesses

I advise re 100's of lone workers so many of our 'accidents' have no witnesses

From our HR team:

"From an employment law perspective, my view is that provided all employees are aware of their obligation to report accidents immediately, who they need to be reported to and how they need to be reported then if they fail to comply with this policy disciplinary action could be taken against them. Of course, this would be subject to a fair investigation and mitigation arguments as to why they did not report the accident. You also need to be mindful of dealing with people consistently when they fail to report accidents."

Bob: can you please elaborate on the social security law reference?

What is your company policy?

Have you communicated the need for employees to report accidents immediately? On the day of the accident. Who do they have to report to? Is there posters around the place of work to remind them?

What action do you take if they don't comply?
