Posted By Angela Wilson What do you think of a company that owns up o not having a h&s officer. My employer has already admitted to not having risk assessments in place, now the person I have been told is the H&S officer has told me he is not the H&S officer and in fact the company does no have a H&S officer, I am at a loss as to who to contact regarding my problem with PPE and the risk assessments currently being carried out.

Posted By Tony Brunskill Angela,
If your concerns are serious speak to the HSE or Enforcement Agency for your activity. You can do so confidentially. If your concerns are not so serious you may want to point out the guidance on the HSE Web Site to the "nominated" H&S Officer. He/She has duties as does the person that appoints them. You need to look at guidance on the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.
Drop me an email if you need more detailed advice.

Posted By garyh Check out you Safety policy and arrangements; it should specify who does what.
If it doesn't I believe your employer may not be complying with sec 2(3) of HASAWA.
Bring that to your manager's attention. In fact this should be your route for all queries - your line Manager.

Posted By Paul Darby I would not go the HSE as the first step, always go to your line manager, then keep pushing it up the tree. Only when this fails, and the concerns are serious go to the HSE.
I have been on the receiving end of an employee going direct to the HSE, when we actually had a project team working on the problem he was complaining about. He didn't mention his concerns to anyone, just went to the HSE.
When the HSE came in they were really happy with our appraoch, including our progress. They actually went to the employee and advised him in future to always speak to his line manager first.
Remember also your company is under no legal obligation to appoint an internal H&S Officer, only to have a source of competent advice, which can come from a number of internal or external sources. I would point this out to your line manager and ask him to follow it up, inculding who is going to begin to push for risk assessments to be carried out.

Posted By Dexter What can you say about working as a EHS Officer then at the same time as a Security Officer. In short, handling two departments in a newly established company. Im having a problem since I don't have people for EHS then i'm the only who knows how to operate the Security Access Control System for security concern as well as CCTV & DVR. Monitoring the security and safety & health is a big task to do. I can't even leave my office when i need to monitor all the workplace as EHS is concern. Hope to have some advise guys....
Thank you!

With respect, it is not good form to hi-jack someone else's thread, even if it is a similar query - at least not without an apology.
That said, I sympathise with your problem. Health and safety is still regarded by some organisations as the 'Cinderella' of core activities. Sometimes issues can be escalated by a serious incident - learn lessons brigade, otherwise it is a case of moaning and plugging away in the hope someone listens!
