Posted By Byron Rodgers I have a client whose workers have to weld seams in pressure vessels some 4 metres from the ground straddling the vessels which are 3 metre cylinders, and which are lying on their sides in wheeled cradles. Overhead is a pair of pendant controlled travelling cranes, either of which could knock the welders off! Above the cranes are typical corrugated steel roof panels and thin joists not capable of carrying a human load.
At the moment they climb a ladder to get to the top of the vessel and, as I say, straddle the beast with MIG welding equipment in their hands. I can't let them carry on like this obviously but a cherry picker, or mobile working platform is probably too expensive for the company as they are only a small outfit.
Are there any acccess platforms which might do the job or can anyone think of an better alternative, that's not too expensive?

Posted By Anthony Slinger Are the wheels on the cradles so that the cradles can move with the vessel on them or are they so the vessel can move on the cradle?

Posted By Bob Thompson CMIOSH is it not possible to isolate the cranes and errect some form of working platform. a side issue you will need to check that they are opperating with Direct current not alternating current as Ac wiil throw the person away should there be a problem, so asside from the dangers of electric shock you have the added danger of the fall.

Posted By Byron Rodgers The vessels are sitting on cradles which are fixed to the floor but have four rubber wheels which the vessel sits on allowing it to be rotated on the cradle. The guy on top can rotate it from up there with a pendant type control and thus keep on top of the vessel. The welding needs to be done horizontally of course as otherwise it would run off.
Also the current is direct so reducing the electric shock risk.
The cranes could be isolated but that would prevent a lot of other gainful employment at the same time. It's a busy little workshop with a lot of work in progress.
What about scaffold towers either side with planks to form a platform and could fall arrest equipment be attached to this?

What about a fixed gantry?

Posted By Byron Rodgers A fixed gantry might work. You mean something which is permanently in place which the vessels can be rolled under and up which the welder can climb for access. Possible, but I have to think about overhead crane access to the rest of the workshop, which is required all the time. Perhaps a semi-permanent gantry which can be dismantled or rolled out of the way when not in use. Food for thought here. Please keep the ideas coming in.
