Hi

Where I work everyone should be wearing HiVis , no smoking, safety boots and probably gloves.

There are lots of trucks and vans 50+ an hour constantly coming in and out dropping off parcels. Also cages being pushed around and heavy objects being moved by hand.

Only one or two people where the Hivis and many smoke in the warehouse. I am the only one with safety boots as walking around in them all day in uncomfertable for most people. There are no barriers installed anywhere between the vans rushing in and the cages. Nobody has been hurt as far as I now but I only started a few weeks ago, and like i said am the only one to wear safety boots and thinking of wearing trainers.

I feel a bit stupid wearing safety boots and would get a lot of stick if I put a hivis and gloves on and don't want to get sacked as its only a manual labour job. A friend got his foot run over by a forklift which crushed the steel but saved his feet so that's why i wear them.

I don't think anything will happen but would like a hivis but don't want to force everyone else to wear them if that makes sense.

Thanks

Not sure what your role is or what you are really looking for in terms of advice, so can only comment generally.

At face value this looks like a safety culture issue. When you say "everyone should be wearing........." I assume that you are referring to rules and procedures ("Safe Systems Of Work") which are derived from risk assessment. So they should be followed!

I would start at the top; make sure that the top Managers are on board and providing leadership.

If you don't have commitment starting from the top, then you really are going to struggle.

One vital point is that all Managers, Supervisors etc must ALWAYS follow the rules and set an example.

They surely cannot argue aginst this; get them to come on board. Cascade the info down (not just what to wear etc, but WHY) to everyone. Someone (yourself?) needs to champion this issue.

Try the persuasion line before getting heavy. It is easier to lead a donkey than to push it!

One thought - the stuff about not being able to wear boots made me laugh - I am now desk based but spent 20 years on chemical plants and a steel works; you put your boots on at the start of the day, and took them off at home time. No exceptions. What is more painful, wearing boots or having your foot crushed by a FLT?

Final sobering thought; workplace fatalities caused by transport incidents run at around 49-59 per year (HSE figures). Most of these are where people are struck by vehicles.

I would say that getting on top of this is really important - you might just save a life.
