Posted By Mark R. Devlin Hello,
Is there a piece of legislation that specifies that inflatable life jackets must be worn in free fall oil rig life boats, as opposed to not more old fashioned solid type.?

Posted By Glen Coe Not aware of anything specific, but check SOLAS 1974 (Safety of Life at Sea)
Maybe if you expand on your concern, we could answer more.

Posted By Elizabeth Reeves I would speak to the MCA or visit their website: www.mcga.gov.ukThey will give you a definitive answer.

Posted By Renny Thomson I think it will probably be industry specific. MCA requirements will probably not apply due the the lenght of the vessel.

Posted By Glen Coe Thinking about it, I am not aware of any other legislation, but I guess your concern is the bulk of a standard life jacket pushing the neck when the head is restrained?
Maybe consider compatibility of PPE under the PPE regs, immersion suit, life jacket and compatability of seats and restraints in the freefall LB?

Posted By Colin Reeves The Life-Saving Appliances Code, an annex of SOLAS, only refers to the need to wear lifejackets, but do not specify what type (para 4.4.2.2). Nowhere else, even in the section on free-fall boats, is there any other reference.
However, this may be irrelevant as your original question mentions free-fall boats from an oil-rig - SOLAS concerns shipping but safety on rigs in the UK waters come under the HSE so they may have different guidance.

Posted By Kenny Bedgood I'm not sure if there is a regulation or code, but if there is one SOLAS would be the likely standard.
For what it's worth my current project is a large FPSO with freefall boats. We're equipping the installation with inflatable lifejackets.

Posted By Colin Reeves Just a thought, but the most likely scenario to require abandoning an FSPO would be a serious fire. Inflatable lifejackets are far more susceptible to heat damage than conventional "solid" jackets ..... !
