Not with standing the need to get out more, H&S screen savers can be very good. Design them yourself to cover issues like lifting tackle, gloves, eye protection etc. etc. you know the stuff. Use photographs off the internet and clip art and don't try to be too clever unless you are a graphic designer by trade. I found the more amateurish the better because people make a point having a look and a laugh and hopefully remember the subject as well.
Now get your IT guys on side and provide them with a new screen saver they can send to every PC on site at the beginning of each month. IMHO it does work but you do have to be committed (possibly in both senses) and produce a different one each month or perhaps spend a day or two doing a dozen each year if you have the time.

Worrying with some of the negative comments (non chartered status i guess). anyway for the serious ones out there we had some in place when i was working for a blue chip company and guess what accident and near miss reporting improved by 75% significant increase in risk assessments and so on....

I haven't got chartered status yet, but that doesn't make you a better person over me.
I have worked very hard and paid alot of money out to self fund my studies in Health and Safety (and still going) and one day i will have chartered status but wouldn't dream of using it in the context that you have.

For what little it's worth, my screensaver at work simply comprises a large moving banner with the following text: "Is work an occupational disease?" I recall seeing it on someone's t-shirt somewhere a good number of years ago.
However, as nobody has ever agreed with or challenged this snippet of humour, perhaps people either don't read it, don't understand it or simply can't be bothered to respond.
Therefore, perhaps screensaver messages, whatever they say, have negligible impact because of their ephemeral nature.
In addition, surely most people would prefer to choose what they have as screensavers rather than something imposed upon them in the style of Big Brother! (i.e. as in George Orwell's book "1984" and not the TV programmes of the same name curiously described as "reality" TV.)

Thanks for all the responses heres the latest. My friend is going to write a screen saver programme for me (He works for Sega Games) so it will be the bees knees.
Lets all chuck some input into the saver and come up with fantastic.
What would you like inc example accidents near misses, work safely and so on.
When this is done i will send out copies to everyone whos interested free of charge.
Finally Naomi i was only kidding but us Chartered's feel we need to wind up every now and then. Please don't let us end up too serious its hard enough out there as it is.

How about a few "scenarios" of a workplace showing good/ bad practices. The screensaver could be on a cycle that highlights any issues to be improved (the scenario would be best suited to reflect your work activity( eg, a construction company could have a scenario of lifting operations or working in excavations etc. The scenario could be either cartoon or a true life photo??
Snipets of legislation - either in boring snipets of actual legislation, or an interesting "take" on the regulations showing either legislation in layman terms or a funny poem, drawing, story etc.

I have the opinion that anything that improves h+s is helpful, screensavers, hmmmmmmm don't know about that one.How many people actually sit there long enough to see a screensaver? Do you take any notice of your screensaver?

Hi Tony
You asked for ideas. As it would be on the computer I reckon a DSE tutorial may be beneficial.
For example, a before and after cartoon of someone using his/her workstation effectively.
One cartoon shows good practice and what the person looks like in 25 years time - fit, well, straight backed etc.
A second cartoon on same subject could show what happens in 25 years if the workstation is not used correctly, eg, arched back, thick glasses, crippled hands, I don't know really but certainly an exageration to prove a point.
The same can be done for manual handling, ie the first cartoon could be someone useing correct procedures and mechanical lifting aids nd another refusing toi use aids or reduce load or get help resulting in them becoming injured and missing some of lifes pleasures to to poor back.
Actually, I have just looked at Essentialskill and although they may not be able ot spell skills correctly the screen savers are ok!
Anyway, good luck, hope you friend sorts it and I have already emailed you my address if he is successful in his endeavours!
