Posted By Heathrow I've been informed by the HSE phoneline that the max permissable hieght ratio should not exceed 6 times the narrowest dimension of the pallet - but that would be totally unstable ! HELP !

Posted By MT Is it your own staff putting things on pallets which are too small or is it a supplier delivering loads like this?

I was under the impression that the guidance notes for the safe use of pallets stated that the height of a load should not exceed the longest base dimension of the pallet ?

Posted By David Whaley Heathrow,
The pallets when loaded must be stable. The height to width ratio is only one item to be taken into consideration. You should consider what the load consists of and how it is packed and secured, for instance interlocked boxes that are shrink wrapped are far more stable than loose items strapped on. The type and condition of the ground the trucks are operating on. The heights the loads have to be lifted to and from.
Your drivers, assuming they are properly trained, will know they are responsible for the safety of the load while they are transporting it. They are entitled to refuse to lift and move any load they are not happy with.
Hope this helps
David
