I have had a quotation for a firm to come in and put accreditation into place it is ISO Management Systems - are they any good and can anyone recommend others to compare quotes? Weare a small bakery but we do need it however cost is a constraint. Sorry it is not an exciting question but it is very important to us. We have grown from very small and H & S has rather overtaken us. Thank you.

get the services of a local H&S adviser for an opinion prior to any accreditation as you may not be large/complex etc enough to need to go the full hog - in-house simple management systems can be OK

Accreditaion to a particular standard when it is not necessary can give H&S etc a bad name

I aggree with Bob.
Your local authority may be able to help with H&S for small businesses as will the HSE web-site.The guidance is good and very easily implemented-------just get the support from your co-workers and be reasonable.

Maggie,

Have a look at the IOSH publication 'Systems in Focus' which can be downloaded free from http://www.iosh.co.uk/in...fm?go=technical.guidance

As you are a small business, I would be cautious of anyone offering to put an "accredited" ISO management system in place as strictly speaking accreditation is only for certification bodies such as Lloyds, BSi etc.

If your organisation is a member of the Federation of Small Businesses, I would have a word with them.

Hi Maggie,

Yes very much so, small to medium enterprises employ upto 250 persons (DTI statistics).

What benefits do you believe, or have you been told, that accreditation will provide for your small business?

We had someone here recommending we went for OHSAS 18001. We are very busy going for SALSA Accreditation and Organic Status on some of our products. It was suggested someone come in to put the whole H & S system into place and we would then be accredited and it would save me a lot of work. We do need something and as Technical Manager I am fully stretched at present without any extra work. I do appreciate we must do it and I was looking for the easiest most cost effective solution.
